Description
An account of the resource
In 1874, St. Augustine opened the oldest library in Florida as a “subscription library.” The library was called the St. Augustine Free Public Library. Patrons gave money to help buy books for the library, and there was no charge to check out items.
By the 1970s there were three independent libraries in St. Augustine, Hastings and Mill Creek serving the residents of St. Johns County. Through the hard work and dedication of many supporters, especially the members of the Association of American University Women, a Library System was born.
On September 27, 1977, the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners voted to establish a Library System for the County, along with a Library Advisory Board. Within 10 years a new 15,000 square foot Main Library would be opened, followed in coming years by the construction of five more branch libraries and the addition of two bookmobiles. The growth of St. Johns County has been mirrored by the growth of its Library System!

Description
An account of the resource
Most of us are familiar with the historical resources about St. Johns County that are located here locally. But do you know about the documents pertaining to St. Johns that are housed in Tallahassee? Join us as Dr. Josh Goodman, Archives Historian at the State Archives of Florida, shows some of the really neat resources that can be found at the State Archives. He not only shows them to us, but he also instructs us on how we can locate the digitized copies ourselves on the Florida Memory website. This event is the first in a five part series. In this one, Dr. Goodman will concentrate on resources specific to the Civil Rights Movement.

Main Library's Adult Programming Coordinator Beth Maycumber organized the event. The description of the event was as follows:
The Friends of the Main Library is pleased to welcome eminent scholar Dr. J. Michael Francis for an event honoring St. Johns County’s Bicentennial anniversary. He will discuss the early history of St. Augustine, with particular attention to the settlement’s diverse population, which included Spaniards, Native Americans, Portuguese, Germans, Flemish, Irish, French, as well as Africans, both free and enslaved.
The talk will highlight Dr. Francis’s recent research project, titled Lost Voices from America’s Oldest Parish Archive, 1594-1821. This event is FREE and open to the public and will take place at the Lincolnville Museum & Cultural Center, located at 102 M.L. King Avenue in St. Augustine. Parking is available for museum guests along either side of the museum building, behind the building (via Pomar Street), and across from the building (grass lot). If you have any questions, please call the Main Library at 904-827-6940.
Dr. J. Michael Francis is the Hough Family Chair of Florida Studies at the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg, and he serves as the Executive Director of La Florida: The Digital Archive of the Americas. Dr. Francis received his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge and was appointed in 2011 by US Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar to serve on the St. Augustine 450th Commemoration Commission. In 2021, Governor Ron DeSantis appointed Dr. Francis to serve on the board of the Florida Historical Commission, and that same year, Spain’s King Philip VI conferred upon Dr. Francis the Official’s Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic. He has written numerous articles and books, including St. Augustine America’s First City: A Story of Unbroken History & Enduring Spirit and Murder and Martyrdom in Spanish Florida : Don Juan and the Guale Uprising of 1597.
This program is a partnership between the Florida Humanities and the Friends of the Main Library St. Augustine. Funding for this program was provided by Florida Humanities and sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Arts and Culture, and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture.

In this virtual program created for the St. Johns County Public Library System's social media pages, Beth Maycumber visits the historic Ximenez-Fatio House Museum in downtown St. Augustine. Beth met with the museum’s director Dr. Roger Smith and archivist and curator Taryn Rodriguez-Boette to learn more about the long history of this coquina structure built in 1798 and owned and managed by the National Society of Colonial Dames of America in the State of Florida since 1939. She glimpsed the museum’s new exhibit, “I Lived Here, As Well”: The African American History of Our Home, that examines what life was like for African American slaves and servants living invisibly to guests in the boardinghouse throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
