In 1963, St. Augustine was in the throes of the Civil RIghts movement. After protests by Black activists, Ku Klux Klan members would drive through Lincolnville and shoot into Black homes and businesses. This article in the St. Augustine Record details the arrest of Rev. Goldie Eubanks and his son, Goldie Eubanks, Jr. Klan member William David Kinard was one of the men who who drove around Lincolnville, terrorizing the residents, shooting into their homes. On October 25th, 1963, numerous Lincolnville residents shot back, resulting in Kinard's death. It is unknown who shot Kinard, but Eubanks would later be acquitted of his charges. The shooting and subsequent arrest escalated tensions in the already tumultuous city.

An account of the resource
The Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center Collection showcases local documents and family histories that tell the story of Black heritage in the Lincolnville community in Saint Augustine. This collection contains photos from the Excelsior High School, the first Black public high school in Saint Johns County, as well as family photos and memorabilia showing the lives of Lincolnville residents.
Our goal is promote, preserve and perpetuate over 450 years of Black history in Saint Augustine.

An account of the resource
This Certificate of Award for "being present at school every day" was given to student Artimishia V. Holloway in 1922. Signed by her teacher and the superintendent, this certificate came from the faculty of Colored School Number 2, the one-room schoolhouse that existed at the site of the Excelsior High School, now the Lincolnville Museum and Culture Center. Colored School Number 2, the first public Black school in St. Johns Country would eventually be replaced by Excelsior and other schools, as the growing Black population of Lincolnville required larger facilities. Item donated by Thomas Jackson.

On the back of the photograph, there is a name and address, which reads: "Arguta (or possibly Nguta) Stokes 552 S. Franklin St. Rocky Mount, N.C. We believe this is the subject or possibly the recipient of this photograph. There is also a stamp that reads: "Nevr-Fade Panel Art Prints Reg. Nov 1 1938 Photo Art Co., Inc. Trenton, N.J.
This image was part of the Preston Family Archives within our collection, who lived in Lincolnville. Their items were donated by someone who bought their house and discovered the artifacts when they were remodeling.

In 1874, St. Augustine opened the oldest library in Florida as a “subscription library.” The library was called the St. Augustine Free Public Library. Patrons gave money to help buy books for the library, and there was no charge to check out items.
By the 1970s there were three independent libraries in St. Augustine, Hastings and Mill Creek serving the residents of St. Johns County. Through the hard work and dedication of many supporters, especially the members of the Association of American University Women, a Library System was born.
On September 27, 1977, the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners voted to establish a Library System for the County, along with a Library Advisory Board. Within 10 years a new 15,000 square foot Main Library would be opened, followed in coming years by the construction of five more branch libraries and the addition of two bookmobiles. The growth of St. Johns County has been mirrored by the growth of its Library System!
