Title
I Lived Here, As Well: An Exhibit and Program documenting enslaved people and servants at the Ximenez-Fatio House, St. Augustine, FL
Subject
We have documented slavery specific to this house through this exhibition. We hope to bring a fuller understanding to our audience of the lives of the people who lived here. The exhibition features images, written descriptions, and an interpretive reproduction of a servant’s hall. The museum has chosen to document the lives of the enslaved in the house, because without their voices, our historical presentation is incomplete. To fully interpret the history of the house, it is vital that their stories are also told.
Description
The Ximenez-Fatio House served not only as a boarding house, but as a permanent living place for many enslaved people and servants who worked within it. Since these peoples were not given a voice in their time, their stories have faded into the background of history. It is our goal with this exhibit and program, to try and bring them into the forefront.
By scouring through primary sources such as slaves’ passes, manumission papers, legal documents, wills, testaments, and censuses we were able to document some of the enslaved who lived here. We studied secondary sources about slave life in St. Augustine, Florida and the South. We examined texts about urban slave quarters and servant’s halls. It is our goal to create the fullest picture possible of how the enslaved lived.
